Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Physiotherapist? ˅

Physiotherapists are qualified health care professionals who are experts in the structure, movement and function of the human body. We treat the human body and the individual as a whole human-being via a holistic approach.

How can Physiotherapy help? ˅

To help you, we first have to know what’s wrong! Firstly, the physiotherapist has to complete a thorough assessment and diagnose your condition specific to you. No one individual is the same. Then, we determine the most suitable treatment and therapy specific to you, depending on our findings. This includes but are not limited to exercise, education, manual therapy (massage), mobilization, manipulation, taping, dry needling and many more. Our ultimate aim is to relieve your symptoms, improve your function and quality of life! See your local physiotherapist and find out what is best for you.

Who can Physiotherapists help? ˅

We can help people of all ages from children, working adults to the elderly. We are also trained to work with a broad range of health conditions including sports injuries, osteoarthritis, chronic pain, lung & heart disease, stroke, disabilities, diabetes, obesity and the list goes on! Are you sure you can treat SO many of these conditions? Yes, it is a requirement to graduate for physios to be competent in these basic conditions. However, if your condition exceeds our expertise, we will refer you to a specialist appropriately without delay.

How fast can a physiotherapist fix me? ˅

If anyone GUARANTEES that they can heal you within 1-2 sessions, they are lying straight to your face. We are not magicians; we are healthcare professionals. Pain and symptoms can be relieved quickly but only temporarily. For full and permanent recovery, it takes time and work from both the therapist AND yourself. Knee pain can take a minimum of 6 weeks to get to full recovery if you are diligent with your exercises. Back pain? 6-12 weeks. ACL rehab - minimum 12 months. Shoulder rehab post-surgery? 12 months. Does Medicare cover Physiotherapy services? ˅

Unfortunately, no. However, you may be eligible to receive up to 5 sessions of Medicare subsidised physiotherapy per year if you meet all the following criterias:

  • If you have a chronic/terminal condition (that is, or likely to be, present for 6 months or more)
  • If your doctor has approved and completed your GP Management Plan (item 721) and Team Care Arrangements (item 723)
  • If you have a completed Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) / Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan from your GP.

What should I bring to my Physiotherapy appointment? ˅

It would be helpful (but not necessary) if you could bring your medical history, specialist or GP letters, scans and other test results. I would also recommend wearing comfortable clothing that you can exercise in and easily access injured areas such as your knee or shoulders.

Can Physiotherapist refer for X-rays or Scans? ˅

Yes, a physiotherapist can refer you for an X-ray that in most cases can be bulk-billed through Medicare (eg hips, pelvis and spine). We can also refer you for other scans such as MRI or Ultrasound but you would have to pay for the full expenses. If required, we will refer you back to your doctor for further investigations in which you may be able to claim partial or full rebates.

What are common physiotherapy treatments? ˅

Treatment modalities may include but not limited to:

  • Therapeutic exercises with or without equipment
  • Education on your injury, anatomy & self management
  • Hands on treatment such as joint mobilisation and therapeutic massage
  • Taping
  • Modifying workplace or lifestyle changes (eg changing your pillow or chair you sit on).
  • Biomechanical analysis and correction of your body and environment (eg changing your posture at work).

To achieve the best results, you are encouraged to be proactive and compliant in the participation of your treatment. The best outcomes are from applying strategies advised to self manage and prevent injuries from reoccurring in the future.
